I did some homework about Barrett, the Honors College, and I learned it is one of the top ranked honors colleges in the country.
“Computer programming and problem solving has always really interested me,” explains Julia S., who hails from Brookfield, Wisconsin. “The description of the Poly Software Engineering major seemed to be the best fit for me. I also really like the community feel here and the fact that it’s more hands-on.”
The Software Engineering program at the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering takes the principles of engineering and applies them to software development. As part of her coursework, Julia can expect to learn different methodologies of software design, operation principles, and approaches to testing.
Expanding her current knowledge while learning new ways of thinking is what most attracted her to the program. Julia explains that she hopes to one day work for a company that innovates and creates new things, “instead of just finding new ways to solve old problems.”
Julia was especially drawn to Barrett, the Honors College. “I came to Arizona with my parents on vacation. We came when the weather was colder back home, and it was so nice when we arrived in Arizona. I toured the Tempe campus and also the Poly campus and I fell in love with Poly. I went home and did some homework about Barrett, the Honors College and I learned it is one of the top ranked honors colleges in the country.”
Coming from Wisconsin, Julia says, she is really pleased to be living someplace warm. And while she was initially nervous to be so far from home without knowing anyone, that quickly changed. “Barrett has such a strong community! I went to the Barrett Retreat and I immediately made friends.”
Julia also appreciates the mentoring program, which helps new students gain their footing and develop confidence as they transition to college. “My Barrett mentor is great! Barrett assigns an upper classman to each freshman. We can ask questions anytime we need help. My mentor has introduced me to so many people, and he has given me opportunities to get involved on campus.”
Coming to ASU from Wisconsin was a big change for Julia, but it was definitely the right one. “I love my classes on the Polytechnic campus. All of my teachers are awesome. It is so nice to have such a close community. I have so many wonderful friends. Being at ASU Poly has been a great experience.”
